Evolution in design trends / 2010Illustration Series
There are a few more pieces in this “evolution in design trends” sub series, which in theory could go on forever. With these illustrations (part of the "Drawing a Day" series) I wanted to poke fun at illustration trends. The same as teal is the new black in fashion, zombies are the new pirates in illustration. It’s all a little arbitrary but I do think we see allot of reoccurring themes and patterns in modern illustration. As with any trend I think people shouldn’t take it too seriously, hence the point of these drawings.

Monsteresque / 2010Illustration Series
Some of the first illustrations from my "Drawing a Day" series. As a child I was a huge Jim Henson fan,
I loved the Muppets, Sesame Street, Dark Crystal, anything and everything Jim Henson. Needless to say he’s had a huge influence not just on my style but also how I see the world. I wanted to visually express the memories from my childhood in these characters. Characters that inhabited it then, and in some form my adult life too.

A Single Man / 2010Poster / 27" x 40"
Another illustration from my "Drawing a Day" series. I loved this movie, probably the best film I saw in the past few months. This is Tom Ford’s directorial debut, before this he was the creative director for Gucci and YSL from 94-04. A very talented man to say the least.

Blade Runner / 2010Poster / 27" x 40"
This was part of my "Drawing a Day" series, you can see the work throughs and other illustrations on my Blog page. Blade Runner is one of my all time favorite films. I started off with a pencil sketch to work out the layout and composition, then found images of Sean Young and Harrison Ford with the angles/mood I wanted. After sourcing photos of bodies in the right posses I brought everything into Photoshop and did some rough scaling/cropping. Then I went into Illustrator and built an outline tracing highlights/shadows and color blocking shapes. The final coloring and details were completed in Photoshop.

Frankie, Fishy & Zombie / 2008You're Beautiful / Solo ShowAcrylic on Woodboard / 48" x 48"
These pieces were my take on old Hollywood sci-fi icons that have been put through a kind of “extreme makeover” filter. The old and irrelevant transformed into what pop culture deems valuable; larger breasts, longer legs. “I’m interested in the discrepancy between reality and the altered reality that is presented to us through the media.” The works goal was to challenge western culture’s idea of beauty and the value that is placed on it by taking those images that are pushed on us and responding to them.

Tom, Olsen Twins & Paris / 2008You're Beautiful / Solo ShowAcrylic on Woodboard / 8-14" x 16"
This is a selection from the second half of the show. Some of the other pieces depicted Britney Spears, Tyra Banks, Jessica Simpson and Maria Carey. This work was about taking on celebrity culture and the values it promotes, such as the constant pursuit of fame at any cost. The 7 severed heads are celebrities who exemplify this drive. People whose only contribution to society is their own image; their only goal to become richer and more famous.

Got some wine made for christmas and thought we’d have some fun with the labels.

O for Olympics / 2010Illustration / Illustrator & Photoshop
“O for Olympics” is my illustration/art response to the growing government and police control of our freedoms and personal privacy surrounding the 2010 olympics. The image is a mix of “V for Vendetta” and the olympic mascot “miga”. It’s meant to be printed at full size, cut out and worn as a mask during the games as a sign of protest while also stopping the wearer from being identified by police surveillance.

Paris - It's All About Me... / 2007Acrylic & Mixed Media on Canvas / 31" x 48"
Originally created for a t-shirt design, this piece was then created as a commission. At the time Paris Hilton (and to a slightly leaser extent now) was dominating the media to say the least. I think the piece is pretty self explanatory though…

New Bigger Better, Workforce / 2005WORK / Solo ShowAcrylic on Canvas / 40" x 32" , 32" x 90"
This series of paintings was inspired by (as the title would indicate) work. When I was younger I had a series of somewhat soul destroying working experiences which spawned the idea's within this show. The pursuit of work just to make ends meet and what that does to your brain, and versely the mentality of the companies that encourage this system. New Bigger Better and Workforce were directed at this idea and companies effect on the individual.

Brains, Happy Pills / 2005WORK / Solo ShowAcrylic on Canvas / 40" x 32" , 32" x 33"
The second part of this exhibit was from the viewpoint of the individual or "employee". The result of these practicies on the worker and how it can impact their life depending on what options they chose to cope.

Exploration on the theme of cloning. The building of parts in labs and the idea of custom gene's. This work also explored the process of developing this technology using flies and the once rare phenomenon of twins, genetically identical organisims.
